New ISHLT Document on Assessing Frailty in LTX Candidates
A new ISHLT Document, Assessing and Addressing Frailty in Candidates for Lung Transplantation: An ISHLT Consensus Statement, has been published in JHLT and is available to read online!
Led by Michaela Anderson, Jonathan Singer, and Monique Malouf, this document was developed to address practical and logistical issues regarding the assessment and management of frailty in lung transplant candidates, offering recommendations on how to select a fit-for-purpose frailty measure, assess timing, and manage the frailty syndrome.
The statement highlights that several frailty measures validated for use in lung transplantation are available to aid programmatic and clinical decisions in the evaluation of lung transplant candidacy. The statement also highlights key knowledge gaps, including the need to validate measures of frailty in critical illness, develop methods to reliably identify candidates whose frailty will reverse post-transplant, and establish pediatric-specific frailty measures.
