Getting Around Sydney
Distances in the inner city are walkable, but Sydney also has an excellent integrated public transport system. Sydney features an accessible and affordable public transport system that includes buses, trains, trams, and ferries. Plan your journey effortlessly with Transport NSW’s online Trip Planner or by downloading the Opal Travel app.
- Train: The fastest way to get across the city. Sydney Metro and Sydney Trains cover most areas of interest.
- Ferry: One of the best ways to see Sydney Harbour. The Manly Ferry from Circular Quay is a highlight in its own right.
- Light Rail: Connects Central Station to the Central Business District (CBD), Darling Harbour, and the Eastern Suburbs (including Bondi Junction).
- Bus: Extensive network. Google Maps and the Transport for NSW app will route you accurately.
- Rideshare: Uber, DiDi, and Ola all operate in Sydney. Taxis are also widely available.
The Opal Card is a rechargeable smart card that works across trains, buses, light rail, and ferries. You can tap on and off with a contactless bank card or phone as well, no Opal card required.
Time Zone
The local time zone in Sydney is Australian Eastern Standard Time (AEST), which is generally UTC+10. Between October and April, daylight savings is observed and operates on Australian Eastern Daylight Time (AEDT), which is generally UTC+11.
