ISHLT Leadership Unveils New Strategic Plan
At the Opening General Session of the ISHLT2025 Annual Meeting & Scientific Sessions in Boston, ISHLT President Christian Benden unveiled the Society’s new strategic plan.
This announcement marks the first update of the Strategic Plan since 2019, and the evolution of the document places greater emphasis on global equity, cross-disciplinary innovation, and measurable impact. Shaped by broad stakeholder input including the 2024 survey of member and nonmember perceptions and needs, the updated framework elevates advocacy, accelerates research, invests in early career development, and deepens our global engagement.
The update to the strategic plan includes an update to the Vision and Mission of the Society, which can be viewed on the ISHLT website.
Vision
Transforming care and outcomes for people with advanced heart and lung disease through transplantation and innovative therapies, catalyzed by research, education, and global collaboration.
Mission
ISHLT unites a global, multidisciplinary community to advance research, education, and innovation in the care of patients with advanced heart and lung disease. Through collaboration, advocacy, and the development of best practices, we work to improve outcomes and shape the future of care worldwide.
Strategic planning shapes not just the work of the ISHLT’s leaders and staff, but focuses the energy of thousands of members for a common purpose. This work reaches patients in hospitals and clinics around the world, and this expansive reach—enabled by structure, supported by vision—makes ISHLT distinct.
