Daniel Goldstein and others at 2025 Awards Presentation

On 30 April, at the closing General Session at the ISHLT 45th Annual Meeting & Scientific Sessions in Boston, the ISHLT Foundation announced Daniel Goldstein, MD from Montefiore Medical Center in Bronx, NY USA as the 2025 recipient of the Francis D. Pagani, MD Endowed Mentorship Award.

Throughout his career as a distinguished leader in cardiothoracic surgery, heart failure and mechanical circulatory support, Dr. Goldstein has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to the growth and development of his trainees, shaping the careers of numerous cardiac surgeons and specialists, and establishing a profound and lasting impact as a mentor. He is described by many of his mentees as a mentor who empowers others to succeed by fostering independence, trust, and professional growth.

Beyond fostering surgical proficiency, Dr. Goldstein’s mentorship is characterized by a focus on the development of well-rounded professionals, emphasizing intellectual curiosity, leadership and person growth. His holistic approach has helped mentees excel not only in the operating room but also in their broader professional lives, balancing career demands with personal well-being.

Mentorship with Dr. Goldstein often continues long after mentees have completed their formal training. Mentees cite his guidance through pivotal career decisions, research opportunities, and complex cases as instrumental in their success in both clinical practice and academic research.

The influence of Dr. Goldstein’s mentorship extends far beyond his immediate trainees, with many mentees now serving in leadership roles and continuing to shape the future of cardiac surgery and heart failure management.
