ISHLT Welcomes New Board Members

ADDISON, TX – 5 June, 2018 –The International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation (ISHLT) is pleased to announce the appointment of Jeffrey Teuteberg, MD, as president of the Board of Directors, and the election of seven new members.

Stuart Sweet, MD, was elected President-Elect and will assume the role of president in 2019. Raymond L. Benza, MD, was elected Treasurer.

Other newly elected members include: Goran Dellgren, MD, PhD, Martin Goddard, MD, Kathleen L. Grady, PhD, RN, MS, FAAN, Manreet Kanwar, MD, and Michael A. Shullo, PharmD.

The ISHLT is the world’s largest multidisciplinary, professional organization dedicated to improving the care of patients with advanced heart or lung disease through transplantation, mechanical support and innovative therapies.


 

Jeffrey Tueteberg, MD | President

Headshot of Jeffrey TeutebergDr. Jeffrey Teuteberg is Associate Professor of Medicine and Section Chief of Heart Failure, Cardiac Transplantation, and Mechanical Circulatory Support at the Stanford School of Medicine in Stanford, CA USA and has been an ISHLT member since 2004.

Dr. Teuteberg joined the Stanford faculty in 2017, after spending 13 years at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. His clinical research interests focus on cardiac transplantation and mechanical circulatory support.

“I’m honored to serve the ISHLT as president and work with Society members to advance the care of our patients and to extend to the impact of the Society across the globe.

“With the Society’s continued growth, diverse membership and global footprint, we will work to focus our strategic goals to provide value to our membership, improve the reach of the Society and assure that the organization can effectively and efficiently support our mission,” he said.

Dr. Teuteberg graduated from the University of Chicago, Pritzker School of Medicine, in 1992 and remained at the University of Chicago for his internal medicine residency, after which he spent a year as the chief medical resident, and general cardiovascular fellowship. Dr. Teuteberg received his heart failure and cardiac transplant training at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston. He received board certification in advanced heart failure and transplant cardiology from the American Board of Internal Medicine in 2010.


Stuart Sweet | President-Elect

McKim Marriott Professor of Pediatrics at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis and the Medical Director of the Pediatric Lung Transplant Program at St. Louis Children’s Hospital and has been a member of ISHLT since 1998. He will assume the role of president of ISHLT in 2019.

Sweet's primary research focuses on improved understanding of the important factors determining outcome after lung transplantation in children. He has served numerous leadership positions within the field, including President of the Board of the Organ Transplantation and Procurement Network (OPTN) / United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) Pediatric Transplantation Committee in 2016-7.

Sweet received his medical degree from the University of Michigan in 1990, along with a Ph.D. in Cellular and Molecular Biology. He joined the faculty of Washington University in 1996. His other interests include ethics and policies related to organ allocation and the use of technology in medicine.


Ray Benza | Treasurer

“Having been affiliated with the ISHLT for many years, I know full well the impactful work the organization is capable of doing. I look forward to serving in this leadership post and playing a role in further advancing the science and treatment of end-stage heart and lung disease.”

Benza, a cardiologist at Allegheny General Hospital (AGH) in Pittsburgh and Professor of Medicine at Temple University, College of Medicine, has been named Treasurer of the International Society of Heart and Lung Transplantation (ISHLT). Dr. Benza, the James Magovern Chair of Cardiovascular Research at AGH, is also Medical Director for Advanced Heart Failure, Transplantation, Mechanical Circulatory Support and Pulmonary Hypertension for the Allegheny Health Network (AHN) Cardiovascular Institute at AGH. He has been a member of ISHLT since 1997

Dr.Benza focuses his clinical interests on the evaluation and treatment of congestive heart failure, cardiac transplantation and pulmonary arterial hypertension. He was named Physician of the Year by the Pulmonary Hypertension Association in 2013. He has long participated in most major clinical studies of new therapies for the treatment of heart failure, mechanical support and pulmonary hypertension.


Goran Dellgren | Director

Headshot of Goran DellgrenDr.Goran Dellgren, MD, PhD, Director Heart and Lung Transplantation, and Mechanical Circulatory Support at Sahlgrenska University Hospital, Gothenburg, Sweden, has been named to the Board of Directors of the International Society of Heart and Lung Transplantation (ISHLT). He has been a member of ISHLT since 2008.

Dr. Dellgren’s clinical and research interests include cell transplantation, aortic valve surgery, mechanical circulatory support and heart and lung transplantation.

Dr. Dellgren received his medical degree from the Karolinska Institute, Stockholm, Sweden,in 1989 and became Board Certified in Cardiothoracic Surgery at the Karolinska Institute 1997 after which he did a fellowship in adult cardiac surgery at The Toronto General Hospital 1998-1999, followed by another fellowship 1999-2000 at The Hospital for Sick Children, University of Toronto, Canada. Dr Dellgren defended his PhD thesis in 2002 at the Karolinska Institute.


Martin Goddard | DIrector

“After 20 years in cardiothoracic transplant pathology and having benefitted from being part of ISHLT, this is a great opportunity to give something back to the Society and contribute to its continued growth and strategic development."

Headshot of Martin GoddardDr. Martin Goddard, a Consultant Histopathologist at Royal Papworth Hospital and Business Unit Lead of Pathology Services, has been named to the Board of Directors of the International Society of Heart and Lung Transplantation (ISHLT). He has been a member of ISHLT since 1997

Dr. Goddard’s clinical and research interests include Cardiac Transplant, Sudden Adult Death, Vascular Disease and Radiology/Pathology Correlations. He is the Cardiac Pathology adviser to the Royal College of Pathologists.

Dr. Goddard received his medical degree in 1984 from Oxford Medical School and is a Fellow of both the Royal College of Surgeons ( England) and the Royal College of Pathologists.


Kathleen Grady | Director

“I am delighted and deeply honored to be appointed to the ISHLT Board of Directors. It is an incredible organization with a long history of accomplishments that contribute to enhancing the lives of patients in the advanced stages of heart and lung disease.”

Grady, PhD, RN, MS, FAAN, Professor of Surgery and Medicine at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine,has been named to the Board of Directors of the International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation (ISHLT). She has been a member of ISHLT since 1983.

Grady’s areas of interest include health-related quality of life, advanced heart failure, heart transplantation, ventricular assist devices, adherence, and psychosocial outcomes, among others. She received her Ph.D. from Loyola University’s Niehoff School of Nursing in 1993.


Manreet Kanwar | Director

Headshot of Manreet KanwarDr. Manreet Kanwar, Cardiologist at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh, Penn.,has been named to the Board of Directors of the International Society of Heart and Lung Transplantation (ISHLT).

Dr. Kanwar graduated from the Gov't Med College, Patiala, Punjab, India in 2002. She completed her residency in Internal Medicine (2004-2007) and fellowship in Cardiovascular Diseases (2007-2010) from St John Hospital and Medical Center, Detroit, MI. She moved to Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh, PA in 2010 for her fellowship in Advanced Heart Failure and stayed on as faculty at Allegheny Health Network since then.

Dr. Kanwar is currently the Medical Director of the Chronic Thromboembolic Pulmonary Hypertension (CTEPH) Program at AGH and has clinical expertise in heart failure, mechanical circulatory support, pulmonary hypertension and cardiac transplantation. Her research interests include risk stratification in pulmonary hypertension, CTEPH and left ventricular assist devices. Dr. Kanwar has been a member of ISHLT since 2010.


Michael Shullo | Director

Michael Shullo headshotMichael A. Shullo, PharmD, Associate Vice President of Transplant Services at WVU Medicine has been named to the Board of Directors of the International Society of Heart and Lung Transplantation (ISHLT). He has been a member of ISHLT since 2004.

Shullo is overseeing the development of new solid organ transplant programs at J.W. Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown, West Virginia. He earned his doctorate and undergraduate degrees in pharmacy from the University of Pittsburgh.
