JOINT SYMPOSIA

ISHLT Joint Educational Symposia with Other Organizations

ISHLT conducts joint educational symposia at both the ISHLT Annual Meeting and Scientific Sessions and at the meetings of other, related organizations.

Joint Educational Symposia at the ISHLT Annual Meeting

The ISHLT Annual Meeting includes up to 50 invited-lecture-based symposia on a variety of topics of relevant interest to the ISHLT community. These symposia range from 60-120 minutes in length and are scheduled to take place throughout the Annual Meeting. ISHLT currently permits up to 3 of these symposia to be organized jointly with other related organizations. The primary goal of such collaborations is to bring to the ISHLT audience both perspective and knowledge that are complementary to existing content and that would otherwise not be available to them. An additional goal is for a reciprocal joint session to be conducted at the partner organization's meeting so that ISHLT can in turn bring to their audience both perspective and knowledge that are complementary to their existing content and that would otherwise not be available to them.

The initiative for a Joint Educational Symposium at the ISHLT Annual Meeting begins at the ISHLT Scientific Council level. A Scientific Council interested in conducting a joint educational symposium must submit an Application for Joint Symposium at ISHLT 2018 Annual Meeting (Word Doc) by February 1, 2017. Prior to submitting the application, the submitter is urged to read the Policies Governing Joint Educational Sessions at ISHLT Meetings.

If approved, the symposium should be developed jointly by both organizations and be submitted by the ISHLT Scientific Council via the standard Symposium Proposal Submission process, the deadline for which is June 1, 2017. The final decision to accept, revise, and/or decline a joint educational symposium rests with the ISHLT Annual Meeting Scientific Program Committee.

Joint Educational Symposia at the ISHLT Other Organizations' Meetings

As above, the primary goal of these collaborations is to bring to the partner organization's audience both perspective and knowledge that are complementary to their existing content and that would otherwise not be available to them. An additional goal is for a reciprocal joint session to be conducted at ISHLT Annual Meeting so that the partner organization can in turn bring to the ISHLT audience both perspective and knowledge that are complementary to the existing content and that would otherwise not be available to them.

Also as above, the initiative for a Joint Educational Symposium at another organization's meeting can begin in several ways. The organization can propose such a collaboration via a letter to the President or the Executive Director. Alternatively, the concept can arise more informally after discussions between members of the two organizations. However it is initiated, the first official step is for one or more ISHLT Scientific Councils to confirm an interest in engaging in such a collaboration. Once this is done, the Scientific Council Chair or Education Workforce Leader must complete and submit an Application for Joint Educational Session at Another Organization's Meeting (Word Doc). The application should be submitted to ISHLT at least 4 months prior to the date by which the final content, speakers, and chairs must be approved by the proposed Host organization. Prior to submitting the application, the submitter is urged to read the Policies Governing Joint Educational Sessions at Other Organizations' Meeting (PDF).

All applications must be approved by the Board of Directors. Once approved, the symposium should be developed jointly by both organizations and be submitted as directed by the host organization.
