ISHLT could not function without the tireless work of its members on various boards and committees. The following is a brief description of the function and purpose of each ISHLT board/committee.
The ISHLT Board of Directors is comprised of 15 individuals: the four Officers (Past President, President, President-Elect, and Secretary-Treasurer) and eleven Directors, reflecting the geographic and disciplinary constituencies of the Society. The Editor of the JHLT, the Medical Director of the Registry, the Medical Director of the MCSD Database, and the Co-Chair of the Development Committee, serve as ex-officio, non-voting members of the Board.
The Transplant Registry Committee consists of a Medical Director, an Associate Medical Director for non-US centers, and associate medical directors for heart, lung, and pediatrics. The Registry Medical Director is appointed by the Board of Directors. The executive committee members are appointed by the Medical Director, with the approval of the Board. Terms are for 3 years. The purpose of the Committee is to develop data forms that facilitate the collection of appropriate information; interface with governmental agencies and international transplant networks; enhance and encourage center compliance with data collection; identify data analysis projects of interest; secure corporate support for the Registry; review and approve member and third-party requests for data analysis; and encourage the use of the collected data for meaningful scientific studies.
The Grants and Awards Committee consists of a chair and a co-chair appointed by the Board of Directors and committee members appointed by the chairs for 3-year terms. The number of committee members is determined by the chairs. The purpose of the Committee is to evaluate the research fellowship award and career development award applications and identify awards recipients, and to evaluate each year's Caves Candidate abstract presentations and determine the winner of the Caves Award.
The Education Committee consists of a Chair appointed by the President and five committee members consisting of the Program Chair, the Program Chair-Elect, the President, the President-Elect, and a member-at-large appointed by the chair. The Education Committee is responsible for ensuring that all educational activities of the Society meet the requirements of the ACCME, for regularly evaluating the quality and applicability of the Society's education endeavors as they relate to the educational needs of the members, for determining the ongoing educational needs of the members, and for recommending to the Board of Directors educational programs and activities which meet these needs.
The members of the Editorial Board are appointed by the Editor, with the approval of the Board. Terms are for three years, renewable once. Representatives of multiple disciplines, including cardiology, pulmonology, congestive heart failure, pediatric transplantation, and nursing, and multiple geographic locations must be included.
The Program Committee consists of a Chair appointed by the incoming President, and committee members appointed by the Chair and reflecting the disciplines of the abstract categories and the geographic constituency of the Society. Terms are for one year. The Immediate Past Program Chair, The Program Chair-Elect, the Editor of the JHLT, and the President serve as ex officio members of the committee. The Program Committee is responsible for developing all scientific and educational activities at the Annual Meeting, including abstract presentations, symposia, and workshops.
This committee is current inactive.
Members of ISHLT can affiliate with any or all of the nine Scientific Councils. The Councils were created to decentralize the mechanism by which the Society pursues its educational, scientific, and social missions. Additionally, the Councils pursue the following:
- provide advice and feedback to the Program Committee and the Board of Directors
- address the need for scientific consensus conferences, documents, and position statements
- define research priorities and opportunities for collaborative research with other entities
- foster the development and maintenance of formal and informal social networks for Society members
