The purpose of the Award is to support research utilizing MCS that would result in an increased understanding of the biologic effects, use as sole or combined therapy, insights into patient/MCS management, innovative use/application or improved outcomes for the treatment of heart failure. The Award is aimed to support rising stars in the field of mechanical circulatory support at a critical time in their career. The Award recipient will have already established a track record in the field of mechanical circulatory support and will aim to further develop their career in this area.
The intent is that the Award will be for a junior faculty position dedicated to a career in the use of MCS as a treatment option for heart failure. It is anticipated that the individual will be clinician or clinician scientist at an active VAD/transplant program with a faculty appointment in either cardiology or cardiac surgery.
- The applicant must have Board certification or be Board eligible (within their stated field) and have an academic staff appointment.
- Applicants must have achieved such no more than 3 years prior to the date of application.
- Applicants must have a full-time faculty appointment at a University or other accredited institution of higher learning.
- Applicants must not have already received extramural (external) funding >$40,000 for the same period from any other granting agency. Simultaneous internal funding for the recipient's institution/department is permitted if it is not for the same or closely related research.
FUNDING STIPULATIONS / AWARD POLICIES:
- Research must begin between July 15, 2014 and January 15, 2015.
- The Award recipient is required to submit at least one abstract to the ISHLT Annual Meeting and one manuscript for publication in the JHLT related to the results of the funded research project.
- The results of funded research cannot have been previously published or presented prior to publication in the Journal of Heart and Lung Transplantation or presentation at the ISHLT Annual Meeting and Scientific Sessions.
- ISHLT and HeartWare must be acknowledged as a funding source in all manuscripts and presentations derived from the funded research via the following statement: "This work was supported by the ISHLT/HeartWare Award for Translational Research in MCS from the International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation. This award was supported by a grant from HeartWare." Copies of these publications must be submitted to the ISHLT Headquarters office within 1 month of publication.
- Funding will be awarded in two portions. 50% of the Award will be disbursed initially, with the final 50% disbursed pending submission of an acceptable progress report to the ISHLT Grants and Awards Committee. A final progress report and summary must be submitted to the ISHLT Grants and Awards Committee within 15 months of the initial disbursement.
- Continuing installments of funding will not be made if the research is no longer being conducted at the original institution.
- The proportion of time to be devoted to clinical work and research for each recipient of the Award should be determined by the recipient's Chair/Chief but not to exceed 50% devoted to research.
- Not more than 25% of the Award may be used for salary support. The remainder is to be used for supplies and performing the research project.
- $2000 of the Award is to be allocated for support to travel to the following year's ISHLT meeting.
- The award recipient and the award recipient's institution agree that the funds will be used to cover expenses for the purpose(s) described in the application, that there is not duplicate funding for these purposes, and that no portion of the award will be used to pay for indirect costs, capital equipment purchases, or institutional overhead.
- Either at the time of application or by completion of the award time period, it is expected that the Award recipient will meet Joint Commission requirements or the equivalent regarding physician experience to manage/implant Ventricular Assist Devices ("VADs").
- The recipient will learn postoperative care and management of complications after VAD implant.
- The recipient will participate in educational and training programs for mechanical circulatory support.
- The Award recipient must be a member of ISHLT in good standing throughout the duration of the funding period.
- The award recipient is expected to attend the annual ISHLT Scientific meeting during the award period.
