The Weight of Angels

I walk through the hospital halls
weeping at the dying rows
of hot house children. I call
their names- "Jenny, Sam...." The list grows

each day. In small words I explain
how the body can't undo the damage
that the illness has done. I watch the pain
become mouth lines, eye lines. This age

is hardest. Letting go the bright years-
There is not enough weight in them. Just
a breeze from the window or open door
will brush their un-tacked souls away like dust. ■
